Pickleball might be gaining in popularity in the Summerville, SC area, but it has been around since 1965. Originally invented on Bainbridge Island by three fathers, Bill Bell, Joel Pritchard, and Barney McCallum solving their child’s complaints of boredom, after over fifty years it is still going strong. Over the decades, the specifics have altered slightly and the handmade equipment has been perfected, making it the sport it is today. One of the biggest reasons why people love Pickleball so much is that it is a friendly, yet competitive game. Also, although it is athletic, you don’t have to have much athletic ability to give it a try and to really have some entertainment with it. As a real estate agent, it is so much fun to invite my clients along and see them immerse with other people in Summerville. Pickleball at Doty Park

Although Pickleball is played all throughout the Charleston Area, my favorite place to get my game on is in Doty Park. It is a quaint, somewhat hidden gem that only locals are privy to. Doty Park isn’t just for Pickleball, it has a lot of wonderfully manicured green space, six tennis courts of Pickleball play, a playground, gazebo for special events and several sheltered picnic tables where we bask in our victory!

The vintage Depot building has been converted to a community center and spread around are officially spaced horseshoe pits with backstops for convenience. And once you have had your fill of Pickleball, if that is even a “thing,” there are walking paths where you can take a victory lap around the entire park. It is a great place to spend the day with the family for a game of Pickleball or just to have some fun and sun.
