If there is one thing that I think we can all agree on, it's that we won’t be very sorry to say goodbye to 2020. It has been very challenging and full of ups and downs. And every time that we think things are going to go back to normal, some new hurdle comes along. Hopefully, the other thing we can all agree on is that the holidays are much welcomed.
And even if we can’t gather and have holiday parties the way that we are used to, that doesn’t mean that we can’t celebrate intimately with friends and family in a way that means, sometimes even more. To take in the best of the holiday season – grab all of the spirit that you can with these safe holiday events going on around the community.
Holiday Events in the Summerville, SC area
Summerville Christmas Parade “Snow Globe”
One thing that has always signaled the holidays for those who live in the Summerville area is the Christmas parade. And it is also a tradition that is able to go on this year. The theme of this year’s parade is the “snow globe” and it is meant to spread positivity through the town of Summerville. Come out to celebrate a non-political meeting of holiday spirit in an atmosphere that exemplifies what Summerville is known for – bringing people together. Social distancing at its best, you can stay six or more feet away, and still have the best seat in the house!
Holiday Parade at Magnolia
Everyone loves a parade, and potentially even two. For the first time ever, Magnolia Plantation and Gardens will host a Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 5th at 11:00 am. The beginning of the parade will be at the Children’s Garden and the procession will finish at Oak Alley. A great way to soak it all in while still maintaining your distance, make it a holiday season full of colors!
Thanksgiving Buffet at Middleton Place
It’s been a challenging year, so let someone else cook Thanksgiving dinner so all you have to show up and enjoy. Have your get together in Middleton Place and skip having guests to your home. The Middleton Place and Restaurant will be all decked out for the holiday season with a traditional turkey-style buffet full of all the best tastes of the holidays. The buffet will be held on November 26th from 11 am – 4:00 pm.
Old Time Summerville Christmas Celebration
On Tuesday, December 1st from 5:30 – 8:00 pm, the Old Time Summerville Christmas Celebration will be in full swing. The celebration will consist of traditional tree lighting. All rules of social distancing will be enforced so everyone feels safe to gather in the fun. There will be no crowds and the countdown will be omitted this year, but none of the holiday cheer will be spared. You can stop at the tree anytime during the event to take family pictures and see it up close. Anyone who is over the age of three is required to wear and mask.
There will also be pictures with Santa in Hutchinson Square and Live Window Displays will be mapped out with a competition to see which display the community feels is the most spectacular. Stop by the Holiday Craft table at the Public Works Art Center, or Letters to Santa with a writing station on Short Central Avenue. And to complete your evening, you can grab dinner at one of the many restaurants that are decorated with holiday fare and ready to serve up an amazing meal.
Third Thursday Block Party
The highly popular Third Thursday Block Party will go on on November 19th and December 17th from 5:30 – 8:00 pm. The block party is a street fair that is likened to an open house where the streets come alive with entertainment and local art vendors. Stroll down the historic Summerville downtown and shop for these Christmas gifts with extended hours and specials for the holidays.
The Grand Illumination & Dinner
Also located at the Middle Place is the Grand Illumination & Dinner event running from December 17th to the 19th. Seasoned actors will take you back to 1782 when the Revolutionary War just nearing the end and British Troops finally retreated and left. Patrons are served traditional early American fare straight from the colonial period. There will also be sites of Torch-lit Gardens, dramatic presentations and scenes, and warm burning fires to warm your holiday heart. Make sure to reserve your space ahead of time.
Although COVID is still looming, and things aren’t back to normal just yet, there are still a whole lot of things to celebrate this holiday spirit. Summerville is still holding as many great traditional events as possible. So, make sure to reserve your spot, if necessary, and don’t miss a minute of the holiday spirit!
